Nothing brings a room together quite like a high-quality area rug. From easily covering stains and worn carpets to adding color and interest to your living spaces, area rugs will transform your room in a way that only a perfectly placed rug could do. Area rugs don’t always belong on hard surfaces like wood or tile, sometimes putting a rug on top of carpet is the perfect addition to your room. One common problem, when using an area rug to brighten or add interest to an already carpeted room, is keeping the rug in place!
Once you have the perfect rug for your space, you do need to think about how to keep the area rug from sliding around and potentially causing accidents! Here’s our guide to keep rugs from slipping on carpet.
Before we get into how to keep the rug from slipping, it’s important to understand why the rugs move on carpet so much in the first place. The reason why rugs, runners, and mats shift on carpet is that the pile of carpet beneath the rugs will naturally move when you walk on them. The weight of your footsteps transfers through the rug and into the carpet pile below, and push towards a certain direction. As this process happens repeatedly, the rug will shift and cause a gradual movement of the entire rug. The plushier your carpet pile below your rug or mat, the more likely you will see movement.
A high-quality rug will generally be heavier than cheaper rugs because they are made with a thick plush pile and are made with a premium backing. Premium cotton backing not only provides stability, it extends durability and protects flooring. If you want a rug to really make your room pop, but also stay put, consider investing in a higher quality area rug. Not only will high-quality rugs be more likely to stay in place under your feet, they will last longer.
Anti-slip mats can provide some extra padding in between rugs and carpets to make the rugs less likely to slip, as well as helps prevent bunching and sliding. There are different kinds of anti slip mats, so be sure to look for mats made specifically for carpets.
Anti slip rug mats tend to come in bulk packaging that need to be trimmed to size. This is actually a benefit, so you don’t have to worry about the specific size of your rug before purchasing. just be sure to trim your anti slip mat smaller than your area rug so it is not visible or cause a tripping hazard.
You can also consider using some of the furniture in your space to help keep your rug in place. These can include furniture like coffee tables, buffets, your couch, bed, anything that works. Of course, you will need these to sit on top of your rug to keep it in place. You may need to apply some sticky tape on the edges in order to keep them from folding up, but you wouldn’t need that much. If you’ve been looking for ways on how to keep your rugs from slipping on carpet, this is perhaps the simplest fix.
You can also use double-sided sticky tape to hold both the rug and the carpet in place. This can be used around the edges and in the center for extra strength.
The problem, in this case, is that the accumulation in the space between the rug and carpet will make the tape lose its adhesive quality over time. You should avoid using strong tapes as these can leave residues behind that can stain your rugs. This is not something you’d like if your rug is an expensive, high-quality rug.
Caulking with a bead of silicone caulk also makes sense, but it’s not something many people would like to do with expensive area rugs. You can run the head of caulk along the edges on the back of the rug, and then a few lines in the middle. After you’ve applied the silicone, you’ll have to flatten the bead using a putty knife or something similar. When the silicone caulk dries, you can then place the rug on the carpet. The dried caulk will hold the rug against the carpet and prevent it from slipping.
Any of these solutions on how to keep rugs from slipping on a carpet will work effectively, and you can always choose any one you’re most comfortable with. Whatever you decide to do, going for a high-quality, heavy rug in the first place will help you avoid most of these problems.
