When Area rugs are shipped, they will most likely be rolled up to reduce the chance of creasing as well as make the rug manageable for the carrier. This causes a unique problem however, when laying out your rug for the first time in your room; it won’t lay flat! How do you flatten and area rug that tries to roll back up or happened to incur a crease during shipment? Over time your rug will most likely relax and flatten on its own, but until then, here are some tips and DIY methods for flattening curls, bumps, and creases in an area rug.
If your rug is being stubborn and refuses to unroll flat, try rolling up the rug in the opposite direction it arrived in. If you have time to let it sit for a few days before you unroll it again, many times this will fix your problem without further ado.
If you are in a warmer climate and have safe place outside to place your rug, heat from the sun will naturally release the tension in your rug fibers. Placing your opposite rolled rug outside or in a garage for a day or too will do wonders to even the most stubborn of rugs.
Consider using two-sided tape made specifically for area rugs. This method will help keep your rug in place, and keep pesky corners from folding up and creating a tripping hazard. This option won’t work if your rug is a bit more stubborn with a severe crease or curved edge, but if your rug just needs a little convincing, two-sided rug tape will be an easy fix.
If you have a relatively flat rug but a stubborn crease, try ironing your rug on a standard ironing board. Be careful with overdoing the heat so as not to damage the rug.
Another option is a blow dryer. You can use a spray bottle to wet the area and blow dry it on medium heat.
If all else fails, a last ditch effort would be to have the ug professionally steam cleaned. The heat from the steam will release tension and cause your most stubborn fibers to lay flat. We advise you to have this done by a professional in your area.
One of the most important thing to remember when flattening out your rug is to have patience! We understand that you are excited to lay it out in your room to see how it all comes together, but with a little bit of effort and time you will have your rug laying as flat as it was meant to be.
