Rug layering is a recent design trend that uses a straightforward concept to create interesting, and sometimes surprising results. It’s quite simple, you lay two different styles of area rugs on top of each other to create an entirely new aesthetic. The most common technique is to place a smaller rug symmetrically on top of a larger one. When done well, rug layering can add whole new flare and depth to your room. Here are our recommendations for layering rugs like a professional interior designer.
Layering rugs will generally look it’s best when you have a larger, more dominant rug on the bottom, and a smaller rug on top. The smaller rug on top works very well as an accent to the larger rug. The furniture on and around the rugs are important too. For example, you will most likely want a coffee table’s 4 legs to fit on the smaller rug if placed on top. Careful planning will ensure your rugs fit the room and is tastefully applied. However, there are no hard and fast rules to rug layering, and we highly recommend experimenting!
Color coordination is where you can get really creative, but it can also be the most intimidating part! Mixing and matching patterns can quickly turn into a mess, but when the colors work together, you may be surprised at how well the rug layers come together. It's best to keep the color of your two rugs complementary of each other to achieve the right look.
Rug layering doesn’t have to mean you only play with different colors and patterns. Sometimes, different rug textures is all you need to add more interest to a room. This combination is more subtle, but in no way less effective. If you tend to choose rugs without too much color or patterns, this may be the better option for you.
The accent of the rug on top will naturally direct the attention to that area. If you have a special piece of furniture in the room, you can draw the eye to that spot with rug layering. On the other hand, if you want attention away from a certain area of the room, use rug layering to pull the eyes away.
In the end, be creative with your rug layers, and don’t be afraid to experiment. You may be surprised at how well some of the wacky combinations and angles work. Most importantly, have fun with it!
